HEALTH BENEFITS OF FASTING

Fasting is a good practice, if properly implemented. It promotes elimination of toxins from the body, reduces blood sugar and fat stores. It promote healthy eating habits and boost immunity. Here are top 10 health benefits you can derive from fasting.

1. Fasting Promotes detoxification

Processed foods contain lots of additives. These additives may become toxins in the body. Some of them promote production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Most of these toxins are stored in fats. Fat is burnt during fasting, especially when it is prolonged. And the toxins are released. The liver, kidneys and other organs in the body are involved in detoxification.

2. Fasting Rests Digestive System

During fasting, the digestive organs rest. The normal physiologic functions continue especially production of digestive secretions, but at reduced rates. This exercise helps to maintain balance of fluids in the body. Breakdown of food takes place at steady rates. Release of energy also follows a gradual pattern. Fasting however does not stop production of acids in the stomach. This is reason patients with peptic ulcer are advised to approach fasting with caution. Some experts believe they should not fast.

3. Fasting Resolves Inflammatory Response

Some studies show that fasting promotes resolution of inflammatory diseases and allergies. Examples of such inflammatory diseases are rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis and skin diseases such as psoriasis. Some experts assert that fasting may promote healing of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis.

4. Fasting Reduces Blood Sugar

Fasting increases breakdown of glucose so that the body can get energy. It reduces production of insulin. This rests the pancreas. Glucagon is produced to facilitate the breakdown of glucose. The outcome of fasting is a reduction in blood sugar.

5. Fasting Increases Fat breakdown

The first response of the body to fasting is break down of glucose. When the store of glucose is exhausted, ketosis begins. This is break down of fats to release energy. The fats stored in kidney and muscles are broken down to release energy.

6. Fasting Corrects high blood Pressure

Fasting is one of the non-drug methods of reducing blood pressure. It helps to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosisis clogging of arteries by fat particles. During fasting glucose and later, fat stores are used to produce energy. Metabolic rate is reduced during fasting. The fear-flight hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline are also reduced. This keeps the metabolic steady and within limits. The benefit is a reduction in blood pressure.

7. Fasting Promotes Weight loss

Fasting promotes rapid weight loss. It reduces the store of fats in the body. However fasting is not a good weight loss strategy. Reducing fat and sugar intake, and increasing fruits and rest are better measures to achieve weight reduction.

8. Fasting Promotes Healthy diet

It has been observed that fasting reduces craving for processed foods. It promotes desire for natural foods, especially water and fruits. This is one way fasting promote healthy lifestyle.

9. Fasting Boosts Immunity

When an individual is on balanced diet in between fasts, this can boost immunity. Elimination of toxins and reduction in fat store also helps the body. When individuals take fruits to break a fast, they increase the body's store of essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A and E are good antioxidants readily available in fruits. They help to boost immunity.

10. Fasting May Help to Overcome Addictions

Some authors show that fasting can help addicts reduce their cravings, for nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and other substance abuse. Although there are other regimens required to resolve addictions, fasting can play a role.

1.Amla

Amla or the Indian gooseberry is the best winter gift we get. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C. And in our country we have dry amla shreds, amla candies, amla powder and even tablets to consume all year round. In winter, we can have amla –as it is, with salt or also as a juice. It is a great fruit for skin and hair, a great antioxidant; it also has good amounts of fibre and hence is good in case of constipation besides having many other ayurvedic benefits.

Oranges are another kind of fruit with high levels of vitamin C which is an antioxidant. They also supply potassium and so are good for patients with high blood pressure.

HOME MADE SYRUP FOR COLD AND COUGH

Cold, sore throat as well as coughs is some very common ailments that affect almost all individuals during the changes in the seasons. While coughing might sound irritating, it is yet the most effective means of clearing the lungs and the airways. Coughing tends to flush the mucus out and also helps in catching the breath if food or even drink has gone down through a wrong pipe. Several drugs available in the market today tend to hamper this natural activity of eliminating toxins from the body.
For instance taking nasal drops tends to dry the nasal secretions. These secretions are the ways by which the body tends to excrete germ laden mucus. Cough syrups tend to suppress the cough and further prevent the clearance of such passages. While facing such mundane ailments it is always advised to opt for homemade remedies which offer short tem reliefs without an interference with the body’s healing ability.
One such formula for relief as per home remedies includes the golden syrups. These golden syrups can be easily prepared by anyone with basic ingredients that are available in most households. The syrup can be made by mixing one tablespoon of honey and lemon juice. Add to this a drop of malt vinegar and see the change in your cough patterns. The intensity of cough would be greatly reduced.
Put these ingredients together in a bottle. Take at least one tablespoon of the mixture in every three hours. The mixture would help soothe the dry as well as rasping cough. Mixture cannot be called a sedative and therefore may be taken as per requirement. It would also not have additional side effects of sleep or discomfort while working.
Also the golden syrup will not harm the body’s processes. The honey used in the mixture would provide the skin with an additional glow. The lemon juice is acidic in nature and would eliminate the germs. These are tested remedies which have been passed from one generation to another over a period of time.
In case of small children who may get affected by constant intake of chemical, such remedies are ideal solutions. Most mothers even today rely on home remedies rather than doctors. But this does not imply that all ailments have ayurvedic solutions rather if the situation gets worse one must consult a professional doctor. Home remedies are merely an option.

BENEFITS OF CHOLESTEROL

Cholesterol is a type of sterol which is usually found in the body tissues. It`s one of the most important compound required by the body that`s why liver makes a good amount of it each day. According to reports of American Heart Association, liver makes around 1000mg cholesterol on a daily basis. Despite the fact that it`s quite important to the body, cholesterol can put heart at risk if the amount is increased even a bit more than the natural requirement.

Our liver packs cholesterol into lipoproteins that are a blend of lipid fats and proteins. The lipoproteins are used for transportation of cholesterol through the bloodstream to various cells. Not only cholesterol, lipoproteins also carry around fat soluble vitamins, other lipids including triglycerides and many other substances through the bloodstreams to the tissues that require these substances.

Cholesterol is responsible for the formation and maintenance of cell walls and structures. It is also used by nerve cell for insulation as well as needed by the cells to assist them in adjusting as per the changes in the temperature. Moreover, it is an integral compound that`s used for synthesizing plenty of critical hormones, specifically the sex hormones, progesterone, testosterone and estrogen.

Cholesterol is also essentially required by the liver to complete the formation of bile juice which is crucial for the digestion of fats. The daily dose of vitamin D is essential for the body and body can`t get vitamin D in the absence of cholesterol. While we stand in the sun, our body converts cholesterol into vitamin D.

Our brain has more cholesterol than any other body part – approximately 25% of the total cholesterol in our body is found in our brain. Research has shown that brain can`t absorb cholesterol from blood, hence, produces its own cholesterol. In brain, cholesterol protects the cells while lying in myelin sheaths. Moreover, it also assists in making sure that the electrical pulses are occurred within the brain. The cholesterol formed by food consumption builds up plaque within the arteries which is damaging for the brain as it prevents blood flow.

cholesterol is an oily compound and doesn`t mix with blood because of it`s water based nature. Extensive amount of cholesterol in the blood negatively impacts the body as it starts to build up on the inner walls of the blood vessels. When too much cholesterol is sticks inside the vessels, the blood doesn`t flow smoothly which leads to strokes and cardiac diseases.
